New music: Big Deal ? Chair

Stripped back to its bare bones, this delicate song documents a relationship stuck firmly in the friendship stage

Big Deal caused a minor internet kerfuffle earlier this year with the release of Talk, a bare-bones love song that sounded like it was recorded using two tin cans, a bit of string and Dictaphone. Since then, Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe have signed with Mute and recorded their debut album, Lights Out, due 29 August. A week before, they'll release Chair ? premiered here exclusively ? the first single and another example of their bare-bones approach to songwriting. With Underwood and Costelloe sharing vocal duties and scratching out riffs on both acoustic and electric guitar, Chair has a sense of urgency and lustful longing. "You don't trust me to sit on your bed, put me on a chair in the corner instead," runs the chorus, starting as a mumbled confession before transforming into the final statement of a relationship stuck at the friendship stage.
